A Moment With Meike Statema
By Mary Gesare
No dream falls into a person’s lap, there’s always a price to be paid in terms of time, discipline, effort and perseverance. That is what we learnt after having one on one with MEIKE STATEMA.
MARY: Describe yourself or who exactly is Meike Statema.?
MEIKE: I am a 32 year old lady living in Holland and working with IDFA International
Documentary Festival Amsterdam, which is in collaboration with the Lola
Kenya screen festival.
MARY: Did you ever plan doing or being what you are now?
MEIKE: Of course, I talked to Mr. Ogova about the workshop, we both had ideas and
came up with a schedule for the workshop. I also came with some firms for
kids to watch during the festival.
MARY: What is your greatest lesson in life that you would like to share with us?
MEIKE: Always be open and listen to others, never judge anyone and try to think
positively.
MARY: Who is your role model?
MEIKE: My mother.
MARY: Do you like reading books? If you do why?
MEIKE: Yes, because they are a great inspiration.
MARY: Which book do you constantly refer to for life’s lesson?
MEIKE: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, It’s a Brazilian book, a small one in size but
talks about how you can guide yourself and the way you can view some things
in life.
MARY: Some few things that people assume you are and you are not?
MEIKE: Very confident, Sometimes I’m shy and don’t have the courage that people
assume I have, I’m truly not that confident.
MARY: Do you like exercising or diet?
MEIKE: Exercise, going to the gym and doing some exercise, dieting no because I like
eating.
MARY: Best dish, Favorite drink?
MEIKE: My favorite drink is water but my favorite food is paster and also vegetables.

is annoying.

MEIKE: My passport of course, and lips moisturizer nothing much.
MARY: What do you like about what you do?
MEIKE: Once you start talking and doing something while people are listening to you, I
find it interesting and also get psyched. I also get to meet new people and make
friends.
MARY: What does it take to make it in this field?
MEIKE: Passion, being friendly and also patient.
MARY: Favorite destination?
MEIKE: Kenya, I’ve actually been to Kenya twice and thanks to Lola Kenya festival I’m
here again for the second time and I like it because people are friendly and it’s
kind of fun being here. I also like New York City.
MARY: What would you bring back from your favorite destination?
MEIKE: New contacts from the new friends I’ve made and keep contact with them.
MARY: Word of advice to aspirers in the same field?
